A hospital in St. Louis receives a message on their computer system informing them that their network has been infected by malware and perpetrators have seized control of the hospital’s computer systems. Control will only be given back to the hospital if $25,000 is paid to the perpetrators.

Cyber Extortion (coverage in respect of crisis consultant costs only means the making of illegal threat(s) either directly or indirectly to the policyholder to:

  • disseminate, effect loss of or cause damage to electronic data, including the modification of data and denial of access to computer or network services;
  • introduce a computer virus into the policyholder’s systems; by persons who then demand specifically from assets of the policyholder or any insured person(s) a ransom as a condition of not carrying out such threat(s).
